By using ultrasonic measurement, the condition and operation of numerous tools and equipment can be examined. In the case of rotating machines, the basis of this is that, for example, bearings operate with high-frequency vibrations depending on their condition and lubrication, the frequency range of which falls into the ultrasonic range in case of incipient faults or insufficient lubrication. Early bearing faults and inadequate lubrication can be determined by measuring ultrasonic waves - either through contact (with a so-called contact sensor) or through the air with a "microphone."
(Application example: for detecting faulty bearings on conveyor belts. Passing by the conveyor belt, ultrasonic waves can be observed, strong ultrasonic sources indicate damaged or extremely poorly lubricated bearings.)
The tightness can also be examined in any gas and steam system, as ultrasonic waves are generated through turbulence in the gas exiting through a narrow gap (hole), allowing the localization of faults. By examining the nature of ultrasonic waves, the proper operation of valves, steam traps, condensate separators, and pressure regulators can also be verified.
Among the diagnostic applications, it is worth mentioning the possibility of inspecting electrical equipment. Loose elements (in transformers, switchgear, voltage transformers) can cause high-frequency vibrations, voltage surges due to faulty connections or insulators, and leakage currents. These phenomena (on low, medium, or high voltage networks) mostly occur accompanied by ultrasonic waves.
